Geboren 1964 in Zürich. Seit dem neunzehnten Lebensjahr freiberuflich künstlerisch tätig als Kunstmaler und Bildhauer. Verschiedene Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen. 1988 Werkbeitrag des Kanton Zürich.
Beginnt 1986 Saxophon zu spielen, Unterricht bei Nat Su, Omri Ziegele und Andy Scherrer. 1995 Studium mit Diplom an der Swiss Jazz School in Bern bei Andy Scherrer, Joe Haider, Bert Joris, Frank Sikora. Weiterbildende Workshops bei Rick Margitza, Ray Anderson, Mark Turner, Cedar Walton, Wynton Marsalis, Billy Higgins, Tom Harrell, Kenny Werner.
Auftritte im In- und Ausland u. a. an den Jazzfestivals Montreux, Willisau, Schaffhausen, Terneusen NL, Grahams- town SA, Splashy Fenn SA, Voronezh RU, Kursk RU. Tourneen und Konzerte in der Schweiz, Italien, Holland, Deutschland, Österreich, Frankreich, Kuba und Südafrika, Russland.

Die CD «The Moholo Songs» wird im Januar 2006 aufgenommen und erscheint in der Reihe «Next Generation» bei «Double Moon Records» in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Jazzmagazin «Jazzthing» im Frühjahr 2007. Zur Veröffentlichung folgte eine Tour durch Deutschland und der Schweiz mit über 30 Konzerten.
2011 erneute Umbildung der Band mit den neuen Mitgliedern Franz Hellmüller (g), Thomas Bauser (p), André Pousaz (b) und Michi Stulz (dr), die CD «Here» wurde Anfang 2012 im Studio Hard aufgenommen und von SRF 2 koproduziert. Die CD erscheint bei «Double Moon Records» im Oktober 2013. Konzerte in der Schweiz, Deutschland und Österreich folgten.
Neben «Subnoder» leitet Jochen Baldes noch die Band «Kobal», die seit Anfang 2009 besteht. Die Band um den deutschen Lyriker und Schriftsteller Nicolai Kobus bespielen und lesen dessen Text »Ach Anna«. Eine Liebes-parforce-tour durchs Jahr. 14 Musik- und Textteile mit Prolog, Januar bis Dezember, und einem Epilog sind zu einem grossen Ganzen zusammengeflochten. Die Band besteht aus: Jochen Baldes Tenor/Sopransaxophon, Michael Gassmann Trompete, Michael Bucher Gitarre, Thomas Bauser Hammond Orgel, Dominic Egli Drums. In den Zeiten der Corona-Pandemie befasste ich mich intensiv mit japanischer Literatur, Film und Kunst. Daraus entstand die akkordlose Band «Jochen Baldes Bashô» mit Jochen Baldes ts&bcl, Christoph Irniger ts&bcl, Raphael Walser b und Lukas Mantel dr. Eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Haiku Poeten Matsuo Bashô. Seine poetischen, abstrakten und wundervollen Gedichte voller Licht und Geistesblitze versuche ich in Töne und Rhythmen umzusetzen. Ein Europäer begegnet einer fremden Welt….

In 2011, the band underwent another reshuffle with new members Franz Hellmüller (g), Thomas Bauser (p), André Pousaz (b), and Michi Stulz (dr). The CD “Here” was recorded in early 2012 at Studio Hard and co-produced by SRF 2. The CD will be released by “Double Moon Records” in October 2013. Concerts in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria followed.
In addition to “Subnoder,” Jochen Baldes also leads the band “Kobal,” which has been around since early 2009. The band, led by German poet and writer Nicolai Kobus, performs and reads his text “Ach Anna.” A love tour de force through the year. During the coronavirus pandemic, I immersed myself in Japanese literature, film, and art. This led to the formation of the chordless band “Jochen Baldes Bashô” with Jochen Baldes on tenor saxophone, Christoph Irniger on tenor saxophone, Raphael Walser on bass, and Lukas Mantel on drums. An exploration of the haiku poet Matsuo Bashô. I try to translate his poetic, abstract, and wonderful poems, full of light and flashes of inspiration, into sounds and rhythms. A European encounters a foreign world…

Zwei Trio Alben – “Gowanus Canal“ (Intakt Records 2013) und „Octopus“ (Intakt Records, 2015) – sowie zwei Alben von Pilgrim – „Mt. Tongariro“ (Between The Lines, 2011) und „Italian Circus Story“ (Intakt Records, 2014). Letzteres war gleich in drei Bestenlisten 2014, unter anderem im Cadence Magazine (USA). Jazzwise (UK) schrieb darüber: „a homegrown rising young sax star’s quintet!“ Irnigers Debut-Aufnahme „Chat Noir“ erschien 2008 bei Brambus Records.
Irniger liebt Jazz. Sein Spiel ist stark in dieser Tradition verwurzelt und von deren Exponenten beeinflusst. Dabei interpretiert er diese Musik nicht als einen bestimmten Sound oder Inhalt. Viel mehr sieht er es als eine Art und Weise, wie man Musik machen kann. Dazu meint er: „Jazz ist für mich jene Musik, welche die Musik ihrer Zeit verarbeitet. Es geht mehr darum wie man spielt, als was man spielt.“ Die Inspiration schöpft er dabei aus allen Musikstilen wie dem Leben als solchem. Dabei stehen seine Heimat, der Zürichsee, die Berge, die Familie, die Menschen, das Reisen (v.a. New York) und verschiedene Kunstformen im Vordergrund. Sie geben den Inhalt und nähren seine Passion für die Musik. Die Melodie stellt Irniger dabei über alles. Auch in der Dichte und Komplexität, sowie im freien Kontext sucht er den Moment und versucht den Melodielinien der verschiedenen Instrumente Gewicht zu geben. Über seine Kompositionen schreibt der Journalist Peter Haffner: „Die Stücke sind Tondichtungen, die zeigen, dass die eingängige Melodie und eine komplexe Klangwelt einander nicht ausschliessen müssen, sondern erst richtig zur Geltung bringen können.“
Infolge seiner regelmässigen Aufenthalte in Berlin und New York entstanden über die letzten Jahre verschiedene Zusammenarbeiten u.a. mit Nasheet Waits – Noreduce „Jaywalkin’“ (nWog, 2013) – Don Philippe, sowie die Band „Counterpoints“ mit Ohad Talmor, Bänz Oester und Vinnie Sperrazza. Weiter spielte er mit Dave Douglas, Dan Weiss, Nils Wogram, Claudio Puntin, Max Frankl, Stefan Rusconi, Mats Spillmann, Christian Weber, Chris Wiesendanger, Vera Kappeler und war über sieben Jahre Mitglied des Lucerne Jazz Orchestra, mit dem er auch auf vier Aufnahmen zu hören ist. Von 2000 – 2006 studierte Irniger an den Jazzschule Zürich Musikpädagogik und an der Musikhochschule Luzern Performance bei Christoph Grab und Nat Su. In den folgenden Jahren nahm er Unterricht bei Dave Liebman, Mark Turner und Ari Hoenig. Er war Gewinner des Förderpreises 2004 der Friedel Wald Stiftung, erhielt die „borsa di studio“ für Sienajazz 2006 und belegte 2010 mit den “Cowboys from Hell” den 3. Platz beim ZKB Jazzpreis. 2015 – 2017 wird seine Band Pilgrim von der Pro Helvetia prioritär unterstützt. Sein Werk ist bis anhin auf über 20 Tonträgern (5 unter eigenem Namen) dokumentiert. Konzerte und Tourneen führten ihn durch Europa, nach Asien und den USA.
Christoph Irniger ist Initiator der Jazzreihe „Jazz im Seefeld“ und war Mitinitiator des Festivals “Jazzwerkstatt Zürich”. Zudem ist er in der Programmgruppe des Festivals “Unerhört!” und unterrichtet an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste und der Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich.

Irniger loves jazz. His playing is deeply rooted in this tradition and influenced by its exponents. However, he does not interpret this music as a specific sound or content. Rather, he sees it as a way of making music. He says: “For me, jazz is music that processes the music of its time. It’s more about how you play than what you play.” He draws inspiration from all styles of music, as well as from life itself. His homeland, Lake Zurich, the mountains, his family, people, travel (especially New York), and various art forms are at the forefront. They provide the content and fuel his passion for music. Irniger places melody above all else. Even in density and complexity, as well as in a free context, he seeks the moment and tries to give weight to the melody lines of the various instruments. Journalist Peter Haffner writes about his compositions: “The pieces are tone poems that show that catchy melodies and a complex sound world do not have to be mutually exclusive, but can actually bring out the best in each other.”

1988 geboren, wächst Raphael im Raum Zürich in einer Musikerfamilie auf.
2008 bis 2013 studiert Raphael an der Abteilung Jazz der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHdK bei Rätus Flisch, Dominique Girod und Christoph Grab. Bei Christian Weber, Frank Sanderell, Larry Grenadier und hauptsächlich Bänz Oester besucht er externen Unterricht. Er schliesst sein Studium mit Schwerpunkt Pädagogik 2013 mit Bestnote in den Performancefächern ab.
Seit dem Sekundarschulalter spielt er regelmässig in diversen Bands im Jazzbereich, von Dixieland über Bigband, Folk und Funk bis zu Freier Improvisation. In einer Dixieland-Band erlernt er autodidaktisch das spontane Walking Bass-Begleiten nach Akkordangaben. Seine Maturarbeit „Big Band Arranging“ wurde 2008 ausgezeichnet. 2010 wird Raphael am internationalen Jazztreffen in Frauenfeld in die international besetzte Förderpreis-Band „Generations Unit“ 2010 gewählt, mit welcher er mehrmals durch Europa tourte. Als gefragter Sideman hat er wiederholt Auftritte an renommierten Jazzfestivals und mit internationalen Jazz-Musikern. 2015 spielt er im Rahmen der Reihe „Hits Recycled“ im Zürcher Moods Eigeninterpretationen von Bob Dylan-Songs. Aktuell arbeitet er mit bei Raphael Jost, JENNY, Dalia Donadio‘s Poem Pot, Christoph Grabs Raw Vison, dem Marcio De Sousa Quintett u.a. Bei Raphael Jost‘s verschiedenen Formationen engagiert er sich zudem im organisatorischen Bereich und das Raphael Jost Standards Trio leitet er gemeinsam mit Jost und Jonas Ruther. Im Restaurant Commihalle ist das Trio seit 2014 als Hausband engagiert und spielt jeden ersten Montag im Monat zum Swingin‘ Monday auf. Mit Florian Egli und Jonas Ruther gründete er 2016 die erfolgreiche Veranstaltungsreihe “The Jazz Trio Invites…” im Zürcher Restaurant Holzschopf.
Seine eigene Band GangArt leitet Raphael seit 2013. Sie wurde bereits mehrfach Ausgezeichnet, bei der Abschlussperformance des Studiums erhielt Raphael damit die Bestnote, 2014 war die Band an den Stanser Musiktagen für den Credit Suisse Förderpreis nominiert, und ihr Debut-Album erschien in der rennommierten Reihe „Next Generation“ des Magazins Jazz Thing und des Labels Double Moon.
Seit 2015 engagiert er sich im Vorstand des Vereins „Jazzbaragge“, welcher allwöchentlich die international rennommierte Wednesday Jam Session in Zürich veranstaltet. Beim Festival für neue Volksmusik „Stubete am See“ in der Zürcher Tonhalle ist er seit den Anfängen Mitglied des Organisationskomitees. Seit 2018 ist Raphael Dozent am WIAM für Kontrabass und Gehörbildung.
Born in 1988, Raphael grew up in the Zurich area in a family of musicians.
From 2008 to 2013, Raphael studied at the Jazz Department of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) with Rätus Flisch, Dominique Girod, and Christoph Grab. He took external lessons with Christian Weber, Frank Sanderell, Larry Grenadier, and mainly Bänz Oester. He completed his studies with a focus on pedagogy in 2013 with top marks in the performance subjects.
Since secondary school, he has played regularly in various jazz bands, ranging from Dixieland to big band, folk, and funk to free improvisation. In a Dixieland band, he taught himself spontaneous walking bass accompaniment based on chord symbols. His high school thesis, “Big Band Arranging,” received an award in 2008. In 2010, Raphael was selected for the international “Generations Unit” band at the international jazz meeting in Frauenfeld, with which he toured Europe several times. As a sought-after sideman, he has made repeated appearances at renowned jazz festivals and with international jazz musicians. In 2015, he played his own interpretations of Bob Dylan songs as part of the “Hits Recycled” series at Moods in Zurich. He currently works with Raphael Jost, JENNY, Dalia Donadio’s Poem Pot, Christoph Grabs Raw Vison, the Marcio De Sousa Quintet, and others. He is also involved in the organizational side of Raphael Jost’s various formations and co-leads the Raphael Jost Standards Trio with Jost and Jonas Ruther. The trio has been the house band at the Commihalle restaurant since 2014 and plays every first Monday of the month at Swingin’ Monday. Together with Florian Egli and Jonas Ruther, he founded the successful event series “The Jazz Trio Invites…” at the Holzschopf restaurant in Zurich in 2016.
Raphael has been leading his own band, GangArt, since 2013. It has already won several awards, and Raphael received the highest mark with it at his final performance at the end of his studies. In 2014, the band was nominated for the Credit Suisse Sponsorship Award at the Stanser Musiktagen, and their debut album was released in the renowned “Next Generation” series by Jazz Thing magazine and the Double Moon label. Since 2015, he has been involved in the board of the Jazzbaragge association, which organizes the internationally renowned Wednesday Jam Session in Zurich every week. He has been a member of the organizing committee of the Stubete am See festival for new folk music at Zurich’s Tonhalle concert hall since its inception. Raphael has been a lecturer at WIAM for double bass and aural training since 2018.

begann mit sechs Jahren Klavier zu spielen und wechselte sechzehnjährig zum Schlagzeug. In Jugendjahren war er als DJ aktiv und produzierte Musik am Computer. Durch seine Erfahrung in unterschiedlichen musikalischen Genres von Punk, Jazz, folkloristischer Musik über freie Improvisation, bis hin zu orchestraler Musik, gilt er heute als eine der innovativsten und eigenständigsten Stimmen unter Schweizer Schlagzeugern. Er leitet ein eigenes Sextett und ist als Arrangeur und Komponist für andere Gruppen tätig. Mit grosser Präsenz und Interaktionsfähigkeit lässt er Energie und Groove in die Musik einfliessen, wobei die klanglichen Texturen immer einen wichtigen Teil seines Spiels ausmachen. Seine Arbeiten mit folgenden Bands haben ihn in zahlreiche europäische Länder, nach Indien, China, in den arabischen Raum und nach Südamerika geführt :

Began playing the piano at the age of six and switched to the drums at sixteen. In his youth, he was active as a DJ and produced music on the computer. Thanks to his experience in various musical genres, from punk, jazz, and folk music to free improvisation and orchestral music, he is now considered one of the most innovative and independent voices among Swiss drummers. He leads his own sextet and works as an arranger and composer for other groups. With his powerful presence and interactive skills, he infuses his music with energy and groove, with tonal textures always playing an important part in his playing. His work with the following bands has taken him to numerous European countries, India, China, the Arab world, and South America:
